VFW to Host #StillServing Celebration July 20-24

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (July 17, 2020) — The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) will present its first-ever #StillServing Celebration the week July 20-24. The virtual event, which culminates in the installation of incoming VFW National Commander Hal Roesch, will shine a spotlight on personal veteran stories that emerged as result of the #StillServing campaign which began in February of this year.

“When we launched the #StillServing campaign it was to bring attention to the unexpected ways veterans continue to serve their country after they leave active military,” said William “Doc” Schmitz, VFW national commander. “The onset of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 multiplied the inspiring stories of veterans’ continued dedication to giving of themselves, now to their local communities. It represents the heart of VFW.”

The #StillServing Celebration will kick off Monday, July 20, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. Central and will include veterans’ #StillServing videos; remarks from special guests; celebrity entertainers like Jesse James Dupree with the rock band Jackyl, Jon Taffer most recently host of the reality series Bar Rescue and Run-DMC’s Darryl McDaniels; a #StillServing T-shirt giveaway and opportunities for VFW members and other viewers to engage with each other and share to their social channels.

While registration is not required, all are encouraged to complete the RSVP form and indicate whether they would like their name posted in the welcome gallery.

“For former military, raising their hand to meet a need is right up their alley,” said Schmitz. “The sense of teamwork and purpose in volunteering is a natural fit for the military veteran. No one is better trained or experienced to carry it out effectively. This #StillServing Celebration brings the truth of that forward and we are excited to share it.”

The VFW encourages all veterans to share stories by going to vfw.org/StillServing to show how they continue to answer the call to serve in ways big and small. In addition, family or friends are asked to use #StillServing in social media posts to honor a veteran in their lives who believes the spirit of service transcends military life.
