For seniors, it may be physically challenging to keep answering the door and even frightening if trick-or-treaters use the holiday as an excuse to scare people or vandalize property.

- If the weather is nice and before it gets late, consider sitting on the porch for a bit. Invite a neighbor or friend to come sit with you, as this is a perfect time to reap the benefits of socialization.
- Take out the old photo albums! What a fun time to reminisce about Halloweens from years past.
- Encourage family members to stop by. Bring the grandchildren in their costumes. They can enjoy walking around in a new neighborhood.
- If alone, invite a friend or neighbor to come to your home and, together, pass out candy.
- When the doorbell rings, take your time getting up and walking to the door.
- Turn off the porch light when you’re finished handing out candy.
- Plan ahead for a cut-off time, after which you will not open your door.
- If driving, be aware that pedestrian/car accidents are one of the biggest safety concerns on Halloween night. Be extra-careful pulling in and out of your driveway and drive slowly through neighborhood streets. Watch out for children, especially in dark clothing who may be hard to see.
