Importance of Nutrition Increases with Age March is National Nutrition Month
Seniors need to maintain their strength and energy

MediNurse, now in its fourth decade as the premier provider of private duty nursing in St. Louis, reminds the public that eating well is important for all ages, but especially for older individuals. Family members and caregivers can be especially helpful in assisting with meal plans.
While many seniors are also managing chronic diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes, they need to be aware that healthy eating will help to maintain their strength and energy. Because caloric needs decrease but nutrient needs increase with age, it’s essential for seniors to pack as much nutrition as possible into each meal.
Eating a well-balanced meal in the morning is an essential strategy for powering up and starting the day. Choose eggs, cottage cheese or yogurt, plus a high-fiber whole-grain bread, shredded wheat cereal or oatmeal to ensure needed intake of protein. Dairy foods also contain the calcium required for strong bones. Include a serving of fruit, either fresh, canned in water or frozen to add in desirable antioxidants.

Lunch is the ideal opportunity to focus on vegetables. Whether raw, leftovers from dinner or frozen (heated in the microwave), vegetables provide high levels of nutrients and fiber. Salads with tuna, beans and other vegetables are nutritious and filling. Snacking during the day can also be healthy; consider cottage cheese with fruit or whole-grain bread with peanut butter and a sliced banana. Whether it’s a meal or a snack, top it off with a glass of low-fat milk. And, be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
At dinner, nutritious dishes can feature fish, meat, poultry or a vegetarian dish with brown rice or quinoa. Consider making more than needed to allow for a second meal and snacks the following day. Mix leftovers with new additions, such as black beans, salsa and low-fat cheese to create an easy tortilla filling. Leftover vegetables and chicken, along with low-sodium chicken broth make for a quick and satisfying soup.

Seniors are often less inclined to cook for themselves, so making healthy meals can be a serious challenge. Be sure your elderly loved one is motivated to do this, and if not, offer to lend a hand with planning, shopping and preparation.
