A Pet Might Not Be a Senior’s Best Friend
Unfortunately, they are often underfoot and can also be a health risk

MediNurse, now in its fourth decade as the premier provider of private duty nursing in St. Louis, reminds the public that pets are cute, friendly, and a positive influence for relaxation and socialization. Unfortunately, they are often underfoot and can also be a health risk.
Did you know that pets are the second leading cause of falls among seniors? A senior with less-than-perfect vision might not see a small pet when underfoot. A senior, who is not entirely stable while walking, may be at risk with a pet in the house. The worst possible outcome from a fall for older adults is a bone fracture or broken hip.
While pets can be excellent social companions for seniors, it’s important to consider whether a good idea is a good plan. MediNurse offers these tips to follow when seniors have pets:

· Make it clear that there is a risk of falling, when caring for pets, especially dogs. Emphasize the need to move slowly and carefully around the house.
- Keep pet toys, such as balls and bones, out of frequently traversed pathways.
- Consider hiring a dog walker as well as a pet trainer to ensure the older person is not taking on more responsibility than he or she can handle.
- Make sure the pet’s leash is detached after walks and not left trailing around the house.
- Continually assess the situation; if the person is unable to care for the pet or in obvious danger, it is time to find a new loving home for the pet.
- Keep in mind that, according to the Centers for Disease Control, dogs precipitate almost eight times as many falls as cats do. Maybe it’s time to turn an elderly loved one into a “cat” person!
