MediNurse, now in its fourth decade as the premier provider of private duty nursing in St. Louis, reminds the public to make senior safety a top priority. Both seniors and family members are more tempted to be outside, enjoying the weather and going places. While these experiences are certainly well-intended and can be very positive, they also come with risk.
A fall can happen in the blink of an eye. One in five falls causes serious injury, such as a broken bone or head injury, which may make everyday activities and independent living impossible. Sadly, many people who fall, even if not injured, become afraid of falling. They become less active, weaker and at greater risk for a fall.
MediNurse recommends these basic safety tips:

- Encourage canes or walkers for fall prevention if someone is slightly unsteady on their feet.
- Utilize assist devices such as wheelchairs and scooters to promote safe mobility and independence if seniors demonstrate difficulty getting around.
- Use hearing aids and wear glasses if needed; if unsure, schedule hearing and vision assessments.
- Shoes should be comfortable and in good shape for walking; repair any broken or uneven steps and pathways from the house. Consider handrails and extra lighting at home entrances.
- Make sure medications are being managed responsibly. Accidental misses or overdoses can cause both physical and mental instability.
- Hire caregivers and/or accept assistance from family members if outdoor activities are planned.
- Subscribe to a medical alert system and program an emergency phone number into phones for easy access if an accidental fall occurs.
Every year, 2.5 million seniors are treated in emergency rooms for fall injuries. More than 700,000 seniors are hospitalized, often because of a head injury or hip fracture. And, staggeringly, the direct medical cost for fall injuries is estimated to be about $34 billion annually.
