Summer is traditionally known as a time for travel. Seniors typically have more leisure time now, than ever before, to explore new destinations or spend time with the grandkids. All travel requires planning, but for seniors traveling this summer, a bit of extra preparation can aid in a more enjoyable vacation. Consider these tips before embarking on your next adventure.
1. Before you leave, schedule a visit with your physician. Use this opportunity for a regular check-up and to speak with your doctor about special vaccinations or medications required for your destination. If you have a pre-existing condition, get a copy of your medical history from your doctor in case you need to visit a hospital while you’re away.

2. If crossing time zones, ask your doctor how to adjust your medication schedule accordingly. It’s important to account for a change in meal times as well.
3. If driving or flying for long distances, be sure to take plenty of breaks and get out and walk around or stretch.
4. Stay hydrated to avoid heat stroke and dehydration.
5. Carry extra prescriptions with you. If flying, be sure to put all prescription medications in their original containers, in a carry-on with you at all times. Insulin needles, or any other injectable medication, require a doctor’s note.
6. Make sure in advance that all lodging accommodations are senior-accessible.
7. Always carry identification and medical information with you. This should be tucked in a safe place such as your wallet or a fanny pack.
8. Wear proper attire and remember your sunblock! Be sure to bring comfortable walking shoes, a hat and sunglasses.
9. Inform friends or family that you are leaving and check in with them regularly while on vacation. If you miss a regularly scheduled check-in, they will know that there is a potential problem.
10. Wash your hands frequently and use hand sanitizer to guard against germs!
