Tips for Asthma Control

For individuals with asthma, summer might be seen as a time for relief because of low tree and grass pollen counts and reduction in cold and flu viruses. However, asthma can worsen in the summer. Irregular thunderstorms and hot weather create outdoor mold that can place a vulnerable adult at risk.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition. It is important to remember that a person with asthma always has it, even if they are not experiencing symptoms. Asthma in older adults presents unique concerns. Normal effects of aging can make asthma more difficult to diagnose and treat. Also, seniors are more likely to have side effects from asthma medications. Special care must be taken to avoid these concerns. Asthma sufferers should visit the doctor regularly and work to keep asthma under control.

1.      Speak with your doctor or asthma educator. Openly discuss any concerns about asthma, medications, and overall health. Disclose all medication and include non-prescription medications such as eye drops or aspirin. This will decrease the likelihood of cross-medication side effects.

2.      Ask for a written asthma action plan and follow it. An asthma action plan clearly states when to take asthma medication and what dosage is appropriate.

3.      Watch for early asthma symptoms. Most asthma attacks begin slowly, learn to tell when one is coming. Track and record asthma symptoms, the symptom severity, and when symptoms occur to understand when an attack can happen.  Take your notes with you when you visit your physician.

4.      Stay away from triggers. Triggers can cause the airway to become swollen and tight due to extra mucus. Your primary goal is to avoid all known triggers such as those listed below.  Discuss asthma triggers with your physician to learn additional ways to avoid them.

Some common triggers include:

·         Tobacco smoke

·         Dust mites

·         Animal dander

·         Pollen and outdoor mold

·         Wood smoke

·         Indoor mold

·         Cold air

·         Medications

·         Cockroach allergens

5.      Monitor outdoor air quality. Individuals with respiratory issues, especially asthma, can easily monitor daily air quality. Check the local air quality on TV and stay indoors when counts are up.

6.      Schedule regular doctor appointments. For seniors with asthma, it is important to see the doctor at least every six months. Regular visits allow the doctor to check progress and, if needed, change the treatment plan.
