Tips for Skin Care While Aging
Skin protection and hydration are especially important in the winter

MediNurse, now in its 4th decade as the premier provider of private duty nursing in St. Louis, recognizes that people are concerned about changes in their skin as they age. It does become thinner and no longer looks as plump and smooth as it once did. Veins and bones tend to become more pronounced, and scratches, bumps and bruises take longer to heal. Years of sun tanning or extensive exposure to the sun may lead to more wrinkles, dryness, age spots, and even cancer.
However, there are specific actions you can take to improve and protect your skin:
- Drink plenty of liquids. A sense of thirst can decrease with age, but it’s important to hydrate by drinking water throughout the day.
- Always apply sunscreen in the morning, even on days when it is overcast. While this won’t reverse visible signs of aging, it will help to prevent further damage.
- Use a humidifier in your home, especially if the air feels dry.
- Don’t smoke. Smoking promotes lines and wrinkles, in addition to a host of other problems
- Use a daily moisturizer, such as a lotion, cream or ointment.
- Take fewer showers/baths and use a mild soap. Warm water is less drying than hot water. Better not to add bath oil to your water, as this can make the tub slippery.
- Check your skin at least once a month for changes, such as a new growth, a sore that doesn’t heal or a bleeding mole – and share any concern with your healthcare provider.
