Brentwood Dog Park Update For May 2021

City staff members are reviewing options to expand and improve the existing Hanley Dog Park to address members' concerns.

At its May 17, 2021 meeting, the Brentwood Board of Aldermen voted to remove the unfunded “Future Dog Park” from the Brentwood Bound project area due to several factors, including:

  • Too many conflicting activities in the park project area, which would overwhelm available parking and could require a larger lot and contribute to water management issues
  • Risk of ongoing damage due to dog park location at the park’s lowest point – adjacent to the creek – which would be subjected to ongoing flooding, and maintenance and repair costs
  • Lack of use of the existing Hanley Dog Park and declining dog park memberships
  • Dog park was the lowest priority of unfunded potential projects based on Fall 2019 community survey results

    • The Hanley Dog Park opened in November 2017. Initial memberships were valid November 2017 through December 2018.

    In Spring 2019, the City of Brentwood opened an additional dog park at Norm West Park. This additional dog park was funded and built through a cooperative agreement with the City of Clayton for use by Brentwood and Clayton residents while the Clayton dog park was being built. This dog park closed effective December 31, 2020, due to planned construction on the Brentwood Bound projects.

    Brentwood Dog Park Membership History

    *The City of Brentwood expects additional dog park members in 2021, as some members typically wait until July to receive the prorated membership rate.

    Hanley Dog Park Improvements

    City staff members are reviewing options to expand and improve the existing Hanley Dog Park to address members’ concerns. Improvements made to date include resurfacing the larger area in the dog park with crushed granite and reseeding the smaller area with grass.

    The Brentwood Bound Plan

    The Brentwood Bound Plan consists of three projects:

  • Deer Creek Flood Mitigation
  • Manchester Road Improvements
  • Deer Creek Greenway Connector

    • The Brentwood Bound Plan is being funded through a combination of grant funding, partnerships, funding from Certificates of Participation, and a one-half of one percent economic development sales tax.

    From the beginning of the Brentwood Bound Plan, additional amenities (such as a dog park) have been proposed as unfunded potential projects.
