Difficult Relationships with Adult Children?

Being the parent of an adult child may not be easy.

I will never forget the statement a client made to me regarding her adult daughter. She looked at me with a serious face and said, "Adult children, who needs them?" She came to therapy because she was unhappy with her relationship with her daughter. She believed that if her daughter (age 38) learned to take her advice things would improve.

Parental relationship transitions can be emotionally painful. Think back to your transition from childhood to teen. What was that like for you? Now, what were your teen years like during the transition to semi-independence? After college or your first full-time job were you welcoming your parent(s) advise? No wonder you may be experiencing difficulty as the parent of an adult child. Often, our own issues stop us from having the kind of relationship we would like.
