Creative & Critical Thinkers: MOSAIC Elementary Students Innovate To Solve Problem

MOSAIC Elementary School fifth-grade students Matthew Gardner and Mason Gebhart noticed a problem on campus: Cardboard boxes collected for student projects were causing an unsightly mess near the school’s entrance.

“It looked pretty bad, and it was in our main entrance, so it didn’t leave a great first impression,” said Gebhart.
Matthew and Mason began collaborating to come up with an innovative solution. They drafted designs, reclaimed construction waste, and problem-solved to ultimately build a permanent solution.

“We decided to build a portable cardboard storage area that’s on wheels and has shelves,” said Gardner. Watch the students explain their project and what they learned along the way.
This project aligns with Mehlville School District’s Portrait of a Graduate , which aims for students to become creative and critical thinkers. Matthew and Mason identified a problem, developed a solution and used persistence when faced with challenges along the way. They’ll be able to use the skills learned immediately next year when they begin attending middle school.
