GAC Wrestling Champions: Alana Vogt and Brendan Mahoney

FZN wrestlers Alana Vogt and Brendan Mahoney both captured conference wrestling titles at their respective GAC tournaments held last weekend. Vogt, a senior, who entered the tournament as the #2 seed, reeled off four consecutive victories in route to the title. Vogt pinned all four of her opponents, including pre-tournament favorite Olivia Schiffert from St. Charles to capture her first conference crown. Mahoney, also a senior, also earned his first conference title after finishing as the tournament runner-up a season ago. Mahoney, who is one of four returning state-qualifiers for the Panthers, pinned all three of his opponents to improve to 11 – 1 on the season. Mahoney’s only loss on the season was to defending state champion Jacobi Jackson from Desmet. In addition to Vogt and Mahoney, the Panthers had an additional 10 grapplers earn medals at the GAC. For the girls: Courtnee Hoff (2nd – 102 lbs), Kayla Hobday (4th – 112 lbs), McKenna Dydell (3rd – 235 lbs) and Caylee Braun (4th – 143 lbs) all finished among the top 4 at their respective weight classes. Hoff suffered her first loss of the season, a narrow 2 – 0 defeat to the state’s #1 ranked wrestler Allyssa King from St. Charles. The boys had five wrestlers make the finals before falling in the championship match. Those wrestlers included: Storhm Jones (120 lbs), Andy Long (145 lbs), Connor O’Neal (160 lbs), Chance Cole (170 lbs), Parker Monnig (195 lbs) and Eddie Angelback (220 lbs). Jackson Cox finished 4th for the Panthers at the 138 lbs weight class.

With the conclusion of the conference tournaments, both the girls and boys teams have reached the half-way point of the 2020 – 2021 season. The district tournaments are set to take place the weekend of Feb. 5 – 6 for the girls and Saturday, Feb. 13th for the boys.

At season’s mid-point several Panther grapplers have records of note. These include:
