U.S. Cellular Hosts “Ask an Engineer” Session
Event Helps Keep Kids from Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield Sharp Over the Summer Months
U.S. Cellular recently visited Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield to help increase understanding of and interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) careers. Engineering associates from U.S. Cellular conducted an “Ask an Engineer” session to engage with youth and show real-world applications of STEM specifically through engineering careers.
The “Ask an Engineer” session served as an opportunity to bring engineering to life for kids and spotlight the different career paths that are available with a technical or engineering education. U.S. Cellular wanted to motivate youth in Springfield to explore career opportunities in engineering and to encourage a more diverse engineering workforce in the future.
“At U.S. Cellular, we are committed to highlighting the importance of STEM education and having our engineering team explain firsthand how technology affects our everyday activities was a great learning experience for area youth,” said Derek Kyle, optimization engineer for U.S. Cellular in Southern Missouri. “We’re excited to provide opportunities like these through our relationship with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield for youth to explore different career paths.”

During last week’s visit, club youth were able to explore U.S. Cellular’s performance drive test vehicle, a tower light assembly, voltage meter, antenna and line tester and interference hunting equipment. The wireless company’s engineers also demonstrated how the network operates and how they regularly monitor it in addition to providing insight into how they got in to the STEM field and the lessons learned along the way.
U.S. Cellular has a longstanding commitment to the community and education. In recent years the wireless company has donated $40,000 to Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield, and associates continue to engage in ongoing volunteer opportunities that enable them to mentor and provide kids with hands-on learning experiences.
