President Trump Will Be In St. Charles On Wednesday

President Donald Trump will be in St. Charles on Wednesday to push for tax reform legislation currently working its way through Congress.

ST. CHARLES, MO — KSDK St. Louis reports the president will visit Missouri this week to push for tax reform legislation currently making its way through Congress. He will speak at the St. Charles Convention Center Wednesday afternoon, the television station said, citing sources in the Missouri Republican Party. The White House confirmed the visit Tuesday, saying the president is expected to speak around 2:20 p.m.

Tax reform cleared a major hurdle earlier this month as the U.S. House of Representatives passed a massive rewrite of the tax code. A Senate bill is making its way through committee on the other side of the Capitol Building, and some differences will have to be settled before a final bill to a vote.

Some critics, including Washington University chancellor Mark Wrighton, have said parts of the legislation, including the repeal of several tax credits that benefit students, would have a detrimental effect on higher education.

According to the non-partisan Tax Policy Center, nearly half of the proposed cuts would go to the top one percent of income earners, and as many as a quarter of middle-class Americans could actually see their taxes go up due to eliminations of educational benefits, local tax deductions, adoption credits and the like.

The bill is also expected to add $1.5 trillion to the deficit over the next decade, according to the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation.
