Women, Children Try to Break Breastfeeding Record

There are three locations for The Big Latch On 2013 in the St. Louis area, including one in Cottleville.

Women and children plan to meet up at Legacy Park in Cottleville at 10:30 a.m. Saturday to participate in an effort to break a world record for most people breastfeeding at one time.
The Big Latch On is a worldwide event in which groups of women meet at registered locations and attempt to get their babies to breastfeed for at least a minute at the same time. Last year, 8,862 women and children breastfed together.
The Big Latch On in St. Charles County is being hosted by the breastfeeding peer counselors from Northeast Community Action Corp's WIC clinics as part of the celebration of World Breastfeeding Week.
"Part of it is, it's just a really fun, novel way to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week," said Johanna Iwaszkowiec, breastfeeding peer counselor for NECAC. "It's always fun to participate in an event where you can break a world record. But certainly part of it is to show support for each other as breastfeeding moms, but also normalizing breastfeeding in the community."
Registration in advance is not necessary.
There are two other Big Latch On meet ups happening in the St. Louis area. One will be at Tower Grove Farmers' Market and at Scott Airforce Base. For more information, head to The Big Latch On website.
