Pitcher Trevor Rosenthal Becomes Free Agent
Unable to work out a deal, the Cardinals released the all-star from his contract. He'll spend much of next season benched due to surgery.

ST. LOUIS, MO — Veteran pitcher Trevor Rosenthal will become a free agent after being released by the St. Louis Cardinals. The righthander had elbow surgery over the summer and is expected to sit out much of next season. Rosenthal has an earned run average — or ERA — of 3.40, meaning that for every nine innings, he gave up that number of runs on average. An ERA under 4.00 is considered good.
The team also issued a qualifying offer to pitcher Lance Lynn, who will have a ten days to accept or decline the one-year, $17.4 million contract. Lynn's ERA is 3.43. If he declines the offer, the Cardinals will receive a draft-pick compensation. Under MLB rules, teams that are losing free agents get an extra pick in the annual draft that assigns rookie players to major league teams.
