ST. PETERS, MO — The St. Louis area may have missed out on Amazon's new headquarters, but as a consolation prize, St. Peters will be getting a new Amazon fulfillment center — the first in the state — along with 1,500 new jobs. Amazon currently operates a sorting center in Hazelwood, Mo., where it employees several hundred people.

“We’re excited to continue growing our team with our first, state-of-the-art fulfillment center in Missouri,” said Sanjay Shah, Amazon’s vice president of North America customer fulfillment. “Our ability to expand in Missouri is the result of two things: incredible customers and an outstanding workforce. Amazon is committed to providing great opportunities for employment and creating a positive economic impact for the region.”

The online retail giant said employees at the new 800,000 square-foot fulfillment center will pick, pack and ship items to Amazon customers, including books, electronics and toys. Full-time employees will be offered competitive wages and a comprehensive benefits package, according to the company.
