Community Garden Plots Available in St. Peters

St. Peters Parks Department has designated two areas of the city for community gardens. Applications for plots are now available.

St. Peters residents looking for a patch of ground to grow some vegetables and flowers this summer now have an opportunity to till two new community gardens.

This year, the city is offering 25 garden plots for rent at two community gardens, said Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Hutsler.

The gardens are located at Oak Creek Park, located off of Willot Road, east of Spencer Road, and at a small patch of land at the intersection of Mexico and Kimberly Drive.

"We just saw what available green space we had and the proximity," Hutsler said. "We wanted to get them in an area where there were a lot of residents, where they could easily be found."

Gardeners will have to bring their own tools and hose to connect to a water hydrant near the community gardens. The plots are 8 feet by 10 feet.

Hutsler said aldermen Tommy Roberts and Jerry Hollingsworth brought the idea forward for creating a community garden. He expects the garden plots will appeal to apartment and town-home residents.

"There's the thought of community and being next to somebody else who actually enjoys the same activity you like," he said. "Garden planting, it's like being on a ball team."

Residents interested in getting their own plot should contact the city of St. Peters at 636-477-6600 ext. 1319. The cost is $20 for a year.
