St. Louis County Police officials said a house fire that left one Crestwood man injured Wednesday was accidental.

Crestwood fire officials first responded to the house fire at 9542 Big Bend Blvd. around 4:30 p.m. A bystander pulled a disabled man from the burning home, Crestwood Fire Chief Mark Menning said. He said no other residents were home at the time of the fire but believed the injured man did not live alone.

KSDK confirmed the resident was helped by Marc Stevener, a neighbor who was driving by at the time.

Menning could not comment on the condition of the victim to Patch Wednesday night, but a relative of the man told St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the victim, who suffers Lou Gehrig’s disease, is hospitalized with "severe injuries."

The St. Louis County Bomb and Arson Unit was called to determine the cause of the fire because of the injury, and to investigate reports of an explosion that may have caused the fire.

St. Louis County Police Department spokesman Randy Vaughn said Friday the department's Bomb and Arson Unit ended their investigation with the accidental ruling.

While the fire was mostly confined to the living room, the house is uninhabitable due to smoke, heat and water damage, Menning said.
