U. City Schools' Hosts 33rd Annual MLK Celebration Thursday

"Please join us as we honor the legacy of Dr. King," school officials said.

UNIVERSITY CITY, MO — University City Schools will host its 33rd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the University City High School. This year's them is "I'll Make a Difference," officials say.

The event will feature performances, awards, and special guest speaker Mary Beth Tinker.

Tinker, who graduated from University City High School in 1970, will discuss her involvement in the 50th anniversary of a United States Supreme Court case that bears her name. That ruling, Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District (1969), clarified students' freedom of speech rights, in and out of the classroom.

E.G. Shields, Jr. has been named the 2019 Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Spirit Award recipient. Shields, a graduate of the class of 1985, is a pastor and social activist with more than two decades of community service, and has served on the district's Board of Education. He will discuss his involvement in the fight for equal rights at the state capital.
