What Bike is Made for the Kind of Snow We Had on Sunday?

An employee at Big Shark Bicycle Company heard only the crunch of the snow as he went out for a ride in the storm.

Dave 'Sneed' at Big Shark Bicycle Company in the Delmar Loop said every employee there has his own favorite sort of bike. His is the kind that can go through a foot of snow.

They have large, low-pressure tires truly designed for winter riding.

"They'll have studs on the tires sometimes," he said. "Absolute hoot."

The bikes have huge gear ratio to get through snow. He took one out on Sunday.

"I did a park tour of University City–Heman Park, Millar Park, did some cemetery cruising. And no one was out," he said. "Only the crunch of the snow under the tires."

He said this sort of bike is used for the Iditabike (like the Iditarod, in Alaska), a 350-mile bike race through snow.
