Wentzville School Board Votes to Keep Tax Rate

With the district's rate at the ceiling, the district will not be able to recoup a loss of revenue caused by a decrease in assessed property values.

The Wentzville School District set a preliminary tax rate at their March 19 board meeting.

The preliminary rate is used by St. Charles County to send out preliminary tax liability notices to property owners, and can be increased or decreased in September.

For the past two years, the district's tax rate was been $4.9891, which includes .77 for the debt service fund and also the .30 levy approved in 2011 for new facilities and improvements.

District Superintendent Dr. Terry Adams recommended that the district keep the remaining levy at $3.9191, which is the maximum limit that was established in 2004.

"By maintaining the $4.9891 rate despite the drop in values, any property owner with a decrease in assessed value will pay less in property taxes to the District," Adams said in his recommendation.

A motion to adopt Adams' recommendation was made and passed, 4 to 3, with the nay votes coming from Board President Terry Ratcliff, Vice President Pat Hacker and Secretary Heather Reiter.
