Asthma Ed, Archery, & Adventure: A Day in the Life of a Superkid

Going away to summer camp can come with anxieties, but not everyone thinks about not being able to participate because of their health. The American Lung Association in Nebraska is hosting Camp Superkids from June 9-15 at YMCA Camp Kitaki in Louisville, Neb. to let kids with asthma experience all the fun of camp.

At Camp Superkids, children living with asthma get to conquer the rope courses, try horseback riding, do water activities, create arts and crafts, cook outdoors, and much more.

“Camp is all about the kids and we want them to see how their asthma should never hold them back. Some camp attendees even return to be counselors themselves,” said Val Haga, health promotions specialist for the Lung Association. “While the focus of camp is fun and education, there are also doctors, nurses, and respiratory therapists on staff 24 hours-a-day to keep the children safe.”

More than 30,000 children in Nebraska suffer from asthma. Camp Superkids is a way for them to accept and learn about their asthma around children who have the same chronic lung disease. Children will also develop an Asthma Action Plan to help better manage their illness.
