Local Camp Teaches Kids How to School Asthma

More than 30,000 children in Nebraska suffer from asthma. To let these kids just be kids, and also educate them about their disease, the American Lung Association in Nebraska is hosting Camp Superkids from June 10-16 at YMCA Camp Kitaki in Louisville, Neb.

“Each summer, kids across the country participate in camps, where they hike, swim, do arts and crafts, and play outside. Camp Superkids is a traditional camp that allows kids with asthma to enjoy all the traditional fun while supervised by health professionals,” said Jill Heins, senior regional director of lung health for the Lung Association. “While having fun, Camp Superkids helps improve the physical condition and psychological outlook of children with asthma. Children leave with the tools they need to better manage their asthma, but also with fun summer memories.”

At Camp Superkids, highly trained doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists and nurse practitioners are on staff 24 hours-a-day to provide medical supervision. Campers ages 8-14 are taught about asthma management, triggers and how to take responsibility for their medication. All campers will go home with an Asthma Action Plan specifically designed to fit their individual health needs. In addition to asthma education, campers participate in traditional camp activities like swimming, kayaking, horseback riding, ropes courses, arts and crafts, fishing and more.
