Among those top-selling singles, one of the most beloved is “Candle in the Wind 1997,” a tribute to Princess Diana, a close personal friend. The song, with lyrics by Taupin and an updated version of the original tribute to Marilyn Monroe, was released on Sept. 13, 1997, and sold more than 33 million copies worldwide. Proceeds from its sale went to the Princess of Wales’ charities. It continues to hold the record as the No. 1 best-selling single in the U.S. and U.K.
