Tesla Meet Google: Tech Companies Now Neighbors In Tahoe Reno Industrial Center

Google buys more than 1,200 acres in the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center for nearly $30 million.

Google and Tesla are neighbors in Silicon Valley and now they are neighbors in the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center. The search engine giant has paid nearly $30 million for 1,210 acres in the complex, joining dozens of other companies there.

The company has not said what their plans are for the site though a new data center is considered a possibility. Apple, Switch, and Rackspace all have or are planning data centers in the area.

One possibility is a test track for driverless cars being developed by Google's corporate cousin, Waymo. Nevada has been pushing itself as a proving ground for driverless cars for years, going back to 2011 when they became the first state to allow the use of the cars.

Google joins Tesla at the site.

The car maker announced in January that it's gigafactory had stared production in January on new battery packs that are going to be a major part of the company's expansion.

The company is putting billions into the complex which it says will employ more than 6,000 people.
