5 Dead, 13 Injured In Las Vegas Apartment Fire: Officials

A deadly fire broke out Saturday morning in downtown Las Vegas that officials said displaced 23 people.

LAS VEGAS, NV — Five people died in a fire at an apartment building in Las Vegas Saturday morning, according to authorities. The two-alarm fire also injured several others, officials reported.

Twenty-three people have been displaced from the Alpine Motel Apartments because of the blaze, according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

Crews were dispatched at 4:13 a.m. to the building in the 200 block of North 9th Street, officials said. When they arrived, firefighters said they saw smoke showing from a three-story apartment complex, where several people were hanging from second-floor windows and others had jumped. Multiple rescues were required, officials said.

Crews battled the blaze for about two hours before declaring the fire was out around 6 a.m., as some personnel continued checking for hot spots.

Initially, officials said four were dead and seven were injured, including five in critical condition. They later updated the numbers at 8 a.m., reporting five people had died, 13 were injured and 23 were displaced.

The cause of the deadly fire is under investigation by the Las Vegas Fire Department,

The Red Cross is providing assistance at the Performing Arts School at 315 S. 7th St.
