City Of Las Vegas: Preservation Month 2021

May is Preservation Month. The annual celebration began as National Preservation Week in 1973 and was extended to the entire month of May in 2005.

This year, the focus is on “telling the full American story.” The theme inspires people to share places that “tell a little-known or underrepresented piece of American history.”

Our Historic Preservation Commission oversees preservation activities in the city so that we can acknowledge the buildings, structures and places of historical and architectural significance and tell the Las Vegas story. Speaking of the Las Vegas story, through funding received from Centennial Grants, Boyd Productions LLC has produced three documentaries about life in Las Vegas with more on the way.

Other projects that help us preserve and tell our city’s story include:

- University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project (in progress; view additional oral histories)

- Blue Angel Motel statue and sign restoration

- Fremont Street Experience LED sign

- Las Vegas Academy of the Arts auditorium and entryway renovation

- Project Enchilada sign restorations
