Connie Jordan on Something to Be Thankful For

Connie Jordan, CEO, and Founder of Anchor Adversity believes that gratitude is the catalyst for a happy life and positive outlook.

Gratitude is an antidote for negative emotions. You can ease your anger, loneliness, sadness, and unhappiness with a dose of thankfulness, and there is always something for which to be thankful. When things feel bleak, look for something (anything!) positive:

• Family -- Be thankful for time spent with family. Maybe you don't get to see your family regularly. Be grateful for connections through phone calls, texts, or social media. What if your family members don't stay in contact with you? Appreciate the lessons you've learned from these relationships. Here are some ideas to get you started.

• Health -- Be grateful for good health around you. Is someone is gravely ill? Be thankful for healthcare providers. What if the health care team can't restore that person to health? Feel gratitude for each moment spent with your loved one.

• Finances -- Be thankful for your job. Are you underemployed? Be grateful for the food on your table or the clothes in your closet. If food is in short supply, then appreciate the people and services that can help you.

• Nature -- Be thankful for the sunshine. Is it raining? Be grateful for the water to nourish the earth. Is it winter? Be appreciative of the sparkling snow and the heat in your house. But what if you are in the middle of a natural disaster? Be thankful that you are going to get to watch nature regenerate itself in the coming weeks and months.

• Safety -- Be thankful for your safety. If fear or tragedy strikes, be grateful for the police, firefighters, EMTs, and other helpers.

No matter how challenging the situation, if you look carefully, you can find something to be thankful for. Focus on that and feel the weight on your shoulders become a little lighter as positive thoughts enter your mind.
