
If you're cat has grown accustomed to the fancier litter that clumps, that luxury will soon cost you more -- maybe even having you scaling back. A truck driver shortage is creating headaches for companies nationwide and will soon be squeezing you at the register.
In addition to the shortage, consumer demand for delivery has also increased. As shipping companies scramble to keep up, they're increasing rates. That costs retailers more and those stores pass the cost along to the consumer. In additional to kitty litter, other items set to increase range from tooth paste, to fast food to childrens toys.
While more robust incentives -- including pay increases for drivers -- have been offered; they haven't moved the needle as much as the industry anticipated. And since autonomous trucks are still miles into the future, human driver are still needed. Part of the challenge in attracting drivers is the growing tech industry. Millennials are more fascinated by gadgets and careers in that sector than they are with the idea of getting behind the wheel of a big rig for a living, according to one consultant.
