Golden Knights Extend Two Contracts

Two defensemen agreed to contract extensions with the Vegas Golden Knights this week.

LAS VEGAS, NV - The Vegas Golden Knights have extended the contracts of two players, the team announced. Defensemen Deryk Engelland and Jon Merrill each received offers from the front office to remain in Las Vegas for the foreseeable future.

Engelland, 35, inked a one-year extension Monday that will keep him on the team through next season. The extension is worth $1.5 million. He's the oldest player on the roster and is one of the team's six alternate captains.

"Deryk has been an integral part of our team, on and off the ice, from the very beginning," Golden Knights General Manager George McPhee said in a statement. "We selected him in the Expansion Draft because we knew he was a quality player with great character. He's one of our team leaders and is enjoying a great season. Deryk has been a longtime Las Vegas resident and his work in the community is exemplary. We are excited to have him a part of the Vegas Golden Knights organization through the 2018-19 season."

Merrill, 25, received a two-year extension from the Golden Knights on Tuesday worth $1.375 million per year. The five-year NHL veteran made has one goal this year, but made it count. It was the decisive goal in a 2-1 home win against the defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins.
