How to Prevent Your Dog From Attacking Guests

Follow these simple tips to prevent a dog bite in your home

Dog bites are more common than you would think, there are about 4 million dog bites per year in the U.S., and 800,000 of them result in medical care. Although we all love our furry family members and they may be warm and loving with everyone in your house, some of them may feel threatened by strangers and attack them. Especially with foster or adopted dogs who’ve had a rough past, it may be harder for them to trust a new person coming into their home. If this is your case these are some recommendations on how to prevent your dog from attacking someone.

  • Try to socialize your pet with people and different animals when they’re young, this way it will feel more comfortable interacting with different animals and in different environments when it’s older.
  • Educate your children and visitors on how to approach your pet, if you know that they are not comfortable with new people or it takes time for them to adjust, let visitors know not to approach or pet the dog until the it feels comfortable and they approach the visitor.
  • Don’t leave children alone with the dog, especially if it’s eating or chewing on a bone. Some dogs don’t feel comfortable with children, if this is the case let children and their parents know that the dog is uncomfortable and to avoid petting it. If you can separate children from the dog using a fence or keeping it in a different room in your home.
