Las Vegas Visitors Spending Money Off The Strip: LVCVA Report

Total visitors to the city and revenue along the Las Vegas Strip, took a hit in January 2018, according to the LVCVA.

LAS VEGAS, NV - The number of visitors to Las Vegas decreased by over three percent in January, compared to the same month last year, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

The LVCVA's executive summary for January 2018 shows 3,393,900 people visited the city last month, down from 3,508,800 in January 2017. That represents a 3.3 percent drop in total visitor volume.

The drop in visitors puts Clark County behind last year's revenue pace by nearly four percent. Coinciding with the 3.3 percent drop in visitors was a 3.7 percent year-over-year dip in total revenue for Clark County. The executive summary shows the county took in $892,064,000 in revenue in the first month of 2018, down from $926,124,000 to start 2017.

Visitors appear to be taking their business to casinos located away from the Las Vegas Strip. Strip revenue decreased from $608,911,000 in January 2017 to $554,752,000 in January 2018 - representing a significant drop of 8.9 percent in total revenue.

Meanwhile revenue increased in Downtown Las Vegas, as well as on the Boulder Strip - which includes casinos such as Sunset Station, Boulder Station, Sam's Town, Green Valley Ranch, and Arizona Charlie's, among others. Though only slightly (1.8 percent), revenue increased downtown, from $55,549,000 in January 2017 to $56,526,000 in January 2018. On the Boulder Strip, casinos experienced a 6.8 percent increase from January 2018 - from $84,887,000 in 2017 to $90,627,000 in 2018.

Across Las Vegas, the room occupancy rate was 83.8 percent, down 1.9 percent from last year.
