Reno's David Wise Wins Olympic Gold Once Again

Reno freestyle skier David Wise defended his 2014 Olympic men's half-pipe gold medal in Sochi, winning gold again this year in PyeongChang.

David Wise will be bringing gold back to Nevada for the second time. The 27-year old freestyle skier from Reno defended his 2014 Olympic title in the men's half-pipe by winning gold yesterday at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang.

Wise secured the gold medal with a 97.20 score on his final run. He remains the only skier to ever win Olympic gold in men's half-pipe after he won the event at the 2014 winter games in Sochi.

Team USA's Alex Ferreira, 23, won silver in the event with a score of 96.40. New Zealand's Nico Porteous, just 16 years old, won bronze with a 94.80.

Wise said having Ferreira win silver made the moment more special. The two got matching tattoos before the games started and have made each other better skiers, he said.

"We've been pushing each other in skiing for a really long time. So being able to be up there and stand together, it was a dream come true," he said.

After winning gold, Wise's two young daughters hurried to the podium to join their father.

It didn't take long for praise to roll in for the Silver State's two-time Olympic gold medalist.

"He overcame injury, adversity, and the doubts of others to show us once again the heart and determination of an Olympic champion. Congratulations @mrDavidWise - the #NVfamily is so proud of you!," tweeted Governor Brian Sandoval.

Senator Dean Heller tweeted, "Congratulations to Nevada's @mrDavidWise on winning the gold!"

Wise was born in Reno in 1990, and his hometown will be meeting him at the airport to greet him when he arrives on Monday, KRNV is reporting.

Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve tweetedher congratulations to the Olympic champ, saying "Reno couldn't be more proud of @mrDavidWise @TeamUSA #GoldLooksGoodOnyou #WinterOlympics #RenoProud"
