Vegas might seem like an odd place to set up shop if you’re a person whose job is to help people handle their money responsibly, but there is a demand for accountants in Sin City… although not quite as many as you might expect.
The demand for accountants in Las Vegas is low for a large metropolitan area with a thriving tourist trade. In fact, compared to New York City or Chicago there are very few accounting opportunities available. While New York has over 4,500 accounting jobs available and Chicago has over 3000 according to this study, Las Vegas has only around 300, making the city one of the less desirable places for accountants to set up shop. However, there are more reasons accountants might want to avoid Vegas as their base of operations.
According to that study, Las Vegas has the lowest average company ratings in the United States. This refers to the overall star rating for those companies by both current and former employees. Additionally, the category ratings that give more specific information about what parts of the company are either good, adequate, or poor. People who are employed by those companies report a number of unsatisfactory experiences, including low ratings on work/life balance, senior management, benefits, and pay. While the overall company ratings in Las Vegas are the lowest in the country, the average category ratings for companies in Las Vegas are the second-worst in the US, only behind Albuquerque.

To top it all off, the average salary in Las Vegas is the tenth lowest for accounting in the country. This implies that the jobs at these low-ranked companies are not compensating employees effectively enough to make handling the drawbacks of working at their companies worth it.
Overall, Las Vegas probably isn’t the best place for accountants to look for opportunities and why would it be! No one goes to Vegas with the goal of being financially responsible. However, if you’re looking for a good place to start or revamp your career, there are quite a few cities with thriving markets and competitive salaries for accountants. There’s definitely an option that will work for you!
