Upcoming Parks And Rec Events In Las Vegas

Here's a look at what's happening around Las Vegas in the coming weeks.

LAS VEGAS, NV - Clark County Parks and Recreation is offering a number of upcoming activities at Wetlands Parkand the Winchester Cultural Center and other venues around Las Vegas. If you're looking to get out and enjoy a little bit of nature with the family, check out this list of events.

Saturday, January 20

  • Discovery Walk: The Discovery Walk takes place on Jan. 20 at Wetlands Park on 7050 Wetlands Parks Ln. at 11 a.m. Join a nature guide to discover the four unique habitats found in Wetlands Park. All ages are welcome. Meeting location: Wetlands Park Nature Center Kiosk. Be prepared to walk two miles or more. Admission is free for all ages but advance signup is required.
  • Weekend Tykes: This event also takes place at 11 a.m. at Wetlands Park on Jan. 20. Weekend Tykes is an all-outdoor program for kids and parents featuring science, story time, wonder and discovery. Admission is free for kids ages 3-6 but advanced signup required.

  • Java Jaunt Birding: This event takes place at 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 21 at the Nature Center at Wetlands Park. Great for beginner birders or anyone interested in wildlife. Walk with a Red Rock Audubon Society birding expert and a Wetlands Park nature guide, and learn the basics of birding. Get to know other bird enthusiasts and learn about birding resources. Be prepared to walk up to two miles in the Nature Preserve. Binoculars available for borrow. Advance signup required. Ages 12+.
  • Sunday Storytime: This event takes place at 11 a.m. at the Nature Center in Wetlands Park. Join a librarian from Whitney Library for a nature-themed story and craft activity. With Las Vegas-Clark County Library District. The event is free for all ages, no signup is required.

Saturday, January 27

  • Nature Tales: This event starts at 11 a.m. on Jan. 27 at Wetlands Park. Nature themed story time and craft activity. The event is free for all ages and admission is free.
  • Adult Water Color Painting: This event takes place at 11 a.m. at the Nature Center in Wetlands Park. The winter skies bring an opportunity for stormy weather, and a chance to add interesting weather related features to a painting. Learn and practice easy watercolor techniques to create a lovely vignette featuring Wetlands Park scenes. Good for beginners. Free. Ages 18+. All supplies provided. Advance signup required.
  • Ballet Folklorico Sol Huasteco: This event takes place at 6 p.m. on Jan. 27 at the Winchester Cultural Center at 3130 McLeod Dr. Ballet Folklorico Sol Huasteco will present “Noche Huasteca." Tickets are $11 in advance or $13 the day of the show and can be purchased at the Winchester front desk or online at www.ClarkCountyNV.gov/parksregistration. Ballet Folklorico Sol Huasteco will take the audience on a journey through the dances of the Huasteca region of Mexico with colorful costumes and vivacious music. Jacquelyn Guzman formed Sol Huasteco in 2012 after her dance students at Rancho High School graduated but wanted to keep dancing. Since then the group has performed all over the valley, and many times at Winchester, including at the Life in Death Festival.   • Young Explorers: This event takes place at 1 p.m. at the Nature Center in Wetlands Park. The Young Explorer Program introduces young adventurers and their grownups to a variety of plants and animals that call the Wetlands Park their home through various activities, live animal demonstrations, crafts, and outdoor exploration. Free for ages 5 and older. Advance signup required.

Saturday, February 3

  • Discovery Walk: This event takes place at 9 a.m. at Wetlands Park. Explore the Nature Preserve with a Nature Guide. See how the change of season impacts plants and the wildlife who call the Park home. Be prepared to walk two miles or more. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The event is free but advance signup required.

Tuesday, February 6

  • Who Goes There: This event takes place at 12 p.m. at Wetlands Park on Feb. 6. Investigate scat & tracks found in the park and create your own plaster mold of wildlife footprints.   • Discovery Walk: This event takes place at 10 a.m. at Wetland Park. Join a nature guide to explore the silly side of nature while walking Wetlands Park Nature Preserve. All ages are welcome. Meeting location: Wetlands Park Nature Center Kiosk. Be prepared to walk two miles or more. Free. Advance signup required.

Wednesday, February 7

  • National Girls and Women In Sports Day: This event is taking place at 9 a.m. on Feb. 7 at the Paradise Recreation Center at 4775 McLeod Dr. The event is free but registration is required.

Friday, February 9

  • Hooray For Ants: This event takes place at 10 a.m. on Feb. 9 at Wetlands Park. Ants are so misunderstood – they do so much for our environment. Indoor and outdoor science-based exploration of ant anatomy and behavior. Ages 6 to 10 welcome. Be prepared to walk two miles. Advance signup required. Please note, this program is currently full with a waiting list.
  • Winter Camp at Lee Canyon: This camp starts at 4 p.m. on Feb. 9 and runs through Feb. 11 at 12 p.m at Camp Lee Canyon at 6201 Lee Canyon Rd. Overnight camp. You will have a choice to arrive Friday night or Saturday morning. Cost is $50 per person and must be at least 8 years old. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by and adult. Snowshoe hikes, games, camp fires, chili cook-off A pancake breakfast will be provided on Sunday. Saturday night we will hold a Chili Cook-off. Hikes are offered for all fitness levels. Participants are responsible for their own food and bedding. We will be providing snowshoes for the first 20 people to register. Tuesday, February 13

  • Wetlands Hand On!: This event takes place at 9 a.m. at Wetlands Park on Feb. 13. Be prepared to get dirty and make a difference! Join us for our monthly community stewardship event. Meeting location: Clark County Wetlands Park, 7050 Wetlands Park Lane, Las Vegas, 89122. Groups welcome. Advance signup required by email: wetlands@clarkcountynv.gov.
  • Nature Tales: This event takes place at 11 a.m. at Wetlands Park and is free for walk-ins.
  • Wetlands Walkers 2018 Kick-Off Hike: The kickoff takes place on Feb. 13 at 1 p.m. Can we, collectively, walk the distance that a Black-necked Stilt migrates? Walk with friends, family or on your own in the Wetlands Park. Keep track of your mileage and we’ll add your individual mileage to the ‘Wetlands Walkers’ group mileage. Open to all. Advance signup required.
  • Fat Tuesday Masquerade Ball: The Masquerade Ball takes place at 3 p.m. on Feb. 13 at the Cora Coleman Senior Center on 2100 Bonnie Ln. Come celebrate the end of Mardi Gras with your friends here at the Cora Coleman Senior Center. The event will feature Ethnic food, the Ellis Rice Band, beads, dancing and festive activities. Masquerade attire and/or Mardi Gras costumes encouraged but are optional. Best dressed prize will be awarded, peoples choice. Registration for this event begins on January 2, 2018, so don’t forget to register. Call for additional info: 702-455-7617. The cost is $8.00 and includes meal and music. Registration required.

Wednesday, February 14

  • Senior Golf Cart Tour: This event takes place at 11 a.m. on Feb. 14 at Wetlands Park. Don’t let mobility challenges prevent you from enjoying all Wetlands Park has to offer. Learn about the history and wildlife of Wetlands Park and visit scenic overlooks of the Las Vegas Wash. The event is free of charge but space is limited. Advance signup is required. More information at www.clarkcountynv.gov/wetlandspark. Wetlands Park welcomes people of all abilities. If you are in need of a program modification, please call (702) 455-7522 two weeks prior to the program closing date.
  • Nature Art For Kids: This event takes place at 1 p.m. on Feb. 14 at the Wetlands Park. Try your hand at painting desert sunsets found at Wetlands Park, using watercolor as your medium! All ages. All materials supplied. Advance signup required.
