City Of Reno: Reno Police Department To Designate First Pedestrian Safety Zone

On Tuesday, June 29, 2021, the City of Reno will install 20 MPH signage at the corner of Lake Street and Fourth Street to designate the first Pedestrian Safety Zone in the city, and the first such zone in the state of Nevada.

At the May 26, 2021 meeting, the Reno City Council approved the creation of three Pedestrian Safety Zones. The City of Reno has seen an increase in pedestrian-related crashes in recent years. Pedestrian Safety Zones are designed to reduce the rate of pedestrians from being injured or killed by motor vehicles on our roadways.
Following the requirements set forth in the Reno Municipal Code 6.06.765 as well as those prescribed by the Nevada Department of Transportation, there will also be Pedestrian Safety Zones established in the areas of East Sixth Street from Center Street to Record Street and Sierra Street from Third Street to Ridge Street.

Nevada has among the highest rates of pedestrian fatalities in the country. By using accident data and heat mapping, analysts and staff targeted multiple areas across the city with the most danger.
In 2015, the Nevada Legislature passed SB 144 - Pedestrian Safety Zones. Nevada Revised Statute (NRS) Pedestrian Safety Zones were created to provide an increase for fines or imprisonment for 23 traffic violations that involved pedestrians to include violations of Driving Under the Influence, Right of Way to Pedestrians, Due Care and Speeding.
