Fernley Estates' Amanda Daigh named "Caregiver of the Year"

Amanda Daigh cares for residents living in the memory care neighborhood “as if each and every one of them was her grandmother,” says Tara Alto, administrator at Fernley Estates Senior Living and Memory Care in Fernley. The Nevada Caregivers Coalition honored Daigh for her outstanding care by selecting her as “Caregiver of the Year” at the 2018 Caregiver Recognition Luncheon last month at the Atlantis Hotel Casino in Reno.

“Amanda strives to understand the wants, needs and behaviors of each resident to provide personalized care,” said Alto. “Many of our residents cannot communicate well, yet she learns details about each of them to help us all carry out care.”

Parkinson’s disease makes it difficult for one particular resident to speak so others can understand. By listening patiently, Amanda learned the resident disliked wearing the shorts his daughter had purchased for him. His mood and behavior improved after the team explained this to his daughter and she replaced his shorts with pants.

“She’s passionate about improving the lives of our residents and through her daily example and problem-solving skills, she inspires her colleagues to do the same. We’re proud and thankful she is part of our team.”

The Caregivers Coalition serves northern Nevada by providing caregivers with resources, information and support. Members include agencies, businesses and individuals that provide care to individuals and loved ones across the life span, according to the organization.
