22 Dogs Found In Barn With Subzero Temperatures, Authorities Say

ALEXANDRIA, NH — A New Hampshire woman already charged with animal cruelty in the deaths of dozens of dogs now faces more charges after 22 German shepherds were allegedly found in subzero temperatures in an Alexandria barn with no heat or fresh water.

Temperatures plunged to 11 degrees below zero in the barn on Tuesday, local police said. The dogs' water bowls were frozen. Jennifer Choate now faces 22 counts of animal cruelty, WMUR-TV reported.

The Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Stratham was evaluating the animals.

Choate was already charged with one animal cruelty count last month after 36 dogs — mostly puppies — died in two fires at her Bristol property. Nine German shepherds were seized from that property, police said.

Choate referred questions to her attorney. Messages were left for him Wednesday.
