Chamber Offers Workplace Safety, Active Shooter Training Program

The Souhegan Valley Chamber of Commerce, Amherst Police are teaming up in October to promote the safety class.

AMHERST, NH — The Souhegan Valley Chamber of Commerce and Amherst Police Department are presenting an Active Shooter and Workplace Violence Safety Training Program from 8:30 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2016, at the Souhegan Valley Chamber of Commerce, located at 69 Route 101A in Amherst, according to a press statement. Workplace violence accounted for 16 percent of all work-related fatal occupational injuries in 2014 and according to FBI estimates 40 percent of all active shooter events took place in business settings: commercial office buildings, stores, factories and warehouses.

Still, many businesses have outdated response plans, or no plan at all. It is a risk every business faces, and an exposure for which many are unprepared. It has become necessary to do more than implement safety protocols; employees need to learn how to react safely when faced with a violent situation. The purpose of this training is to provide business owners with knowledge and procedures on how to prepare if an active shooter situation arises as well as best safety practices if a disgruntled employee or patron should cause any problems.

“We feel that nearly all businesses will benefit from this information,” explained Tracy Hutchins, president of the Souhegan Valley Chamber. “We prefer to think that it can’t or won’t happen in New Hampshire, but in fact, instances do happen. In May of 2016, parts of Bedford and Manchester were under a lockdown while police searched for a shooter. However, workplace violence can take many forms and involve employees, or a disgruntled customer. Preparedness is key.”
