Fatal Hit and Run Driver's Case Continued

A Mont Vernon man charged with killing a retired Amherst fire chief when he struck the victim with his car on Dec. 23 had his probable cause hearing continued.

According to Nashua District Court officials, the hearing for Travis Hobbs, 20, of Mont Vernon that was scheduled to take place on Monday morning is now scheduled for Jan. 16 at 9:30 a.m. in the 9th Circuit District Division Court in Milford. The hearing was continued after Hobbs' defense lawyer, Attorney Eric Wilson, filed a motion to postpone on Jan 3., according to Nashua District Court officials.

Hobbs turned himself in to Amherst Police on Dec. 24 one day after police say he struck John Bachman, 71, of Amherst with his car.

According to police, Hobbs said he thought he hit a snow bank and didn't realize he had struck Bachman with his car. Bachman had gone out to his mailbox to check his mail when the accident happened, according to police.

Hobbs is charged with negligent homicide. If a district court judge finds probable cause to support the charge, Hobbs' case will move on to a Hillsborough County Superior Court Grand Jury for a possible indictment.
