Pump Up Your Look With a Pop of Pink

Studio X The Art of Hair is donating the proceeds of their pink promotion to the American Cancer Society through the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.

It's become one of the most popular ways to make a quick donation, and have a little fun, during the pinkest month of the year: adding pink extensions to your hair at a local salon.

Salons all over Southern New Hampshire in recent years have started holding fundraisers for their breast cancer charity of choice, inviting the public in to add pink extensions to their hair, and other fun flair, and Studio X The Art of Hair in Amherst is just one of the local salons offering these services.

Studio X owner Kymberly Thompson said Thursday her salon will continue running its pink promotion through Saturday, Oct. 19, with the funds raised this month, and at an event they held on Sept. 25, going to the American Cancer Society through the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk being held Sunday. A few of the hairstylists at Studio X will walk in the Nashua event on Oct. 20.

Thompson said she has been giving clients pink hair extensions for about six years, beginning back when she owned Salon Exclusive in Milford.

"I work with a lot of women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer," Thompson said. "Seeing what they go through, this is a way of giving back."

In addition to hot pink, light pink and "grizzly" extensions, (a black patterned pink extension that sort of looks like a feather) the salon and the spa Thomas co-owns downstairs – Le Spa 141 – is offering up some other ways to donate to the walk.

Angela Gagnon is offering pink eyelash extensions in the spa, and a raffle basket full of hair products and cosmetics is up for grabs during their pink promotion. The full proceeds from all of these are going to the American Cancer Society.

Thomas estimated the salon had raised about $500 so far during their pink promotions, and there are still two days left to help build that amount.

They are taking clients as walk-ins for the pink promotions, but appointments may also be booked ahead of time (especially if you are coming in with a group) by calling 883-0935.

Salon X is open Thursday until 8 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Studio X, located in the Heritage Plaza at 141 Route 101A, across from Joey's Diner, has been open since January 2012. The salon offers a full range of services including hair cuts, hair coloring services, perms, keratin treatments and more.

Thompson said if people like the temporary hair extensions she can also do them in a variety colors, including school colors for the spirit-oriented student (or parent).

Le Spa at 141 opened downstairs from the salon about six months later in June 2012. Co-owned by Thompson and Tracy LeBlond, the spa offers massages, spray tans, body exfoliation treatments, facials and more.
