Monday Essentials: Running, Buzzing and Scamming
Get ready for another week with Patch!

1. Weather Report: The week kicks off with showers before giving way to partly cloudy weather. Thunderstorms will come in on Thursday before things get mostly sunny this weekend. Expect temperatures to be in the low 80s.
2. In Case You Missed It: Patch Editor Robert Michaelson had an encounter with a scammer on the local rental listings on Craigslist. Read his story so you don't get roped in.
3. Run and register! Girls on the Run registration begins at 7 p.m. tonight. Girls on the Run councils across the United States and Canada serve girls in their local communities under the umbrella of Girls on the Run International. Their 24-lesson curriculum is designed for 3rd – 8th grade girls and combines training for a 5k run with lessons that inspire them to recognize and honor their individual strengths and talents and to celebrate their inner selves. The culminating event of the 12-week season is the opportunity for the girls to participate in a non-competitive 5K running event. Register here.
4. The Buzz! Don't forget that the final program in the Amherst Town Library’s summer series for adults, Breaking New Ground, is “A Year in the Life of a Honeybee Colony and Its Beekeeper” on Wednesday, August 7 at 7 p.m. Beekeeper Birgit deWeerd will take you through the activities in and around a beehive with her slideshow, starting in January and ending in the fall with the honey harvest. Birgit is a beekeeper in Bedford, MA who became fascinated by beekeeping more than 25 years ago and ever since has been committed to expanding the understanding of, and the respect for, and the importance of honeybees in our environment. Birgit will also share information about many of the pollen and nectar producing blossoms the bees visit on their foraging trips through the seasons, opening another gardening dimension, and maybe, setting the seed for the start of a most interesting hobby—that of becoming a beekeeper yourself. Beekeeper Birgit is a retired MIT chemist; educator; author of the book, Let Me Tell You About My Bees;” and, the business owner of deWeerd Bee Products in Bedford, MA. This event is free and open to the public. However, registration is REQUIRED for this program due to space limitations. You can register for this event by calling 673-2288, emailing library@amherst.lib.nh.us or by visiting our website at www.amherst.lib.nh.us and selecting “Calendar of Events.”
5. Town Hall operations open. While town hall itself is being repaired, the departments within have relocated their services. The offices of the Town Clerk, Tax Collector, Assessing, and Community Development (Building, Planning, Zoning, Code Enforcement, and Economic Development) have been relocated to temporary offices in the Central Fire Station Community Room, located at 177 Amherst Street. Administration and Finance are relocating to the Amherst Middle School. All phone numbers, email, and hours of operation will remain the same.
