BEDFORD, NH — This week, there will be a softball game between Police and Fire departments during National Night Out, and the Historical Society invites residents to an open house and ice cream social. Also, don't miss Wednesday's "60s Invasion." Here are the top five things to know in Bedford this week.

  1. National Night Out is this Tuesday. Join Bedford police in a night of family friendly fun, including a softball game between Police and Fire departments starting at 6 p.m. Emergency vehicles will be on hand and available for tours.
  2. A new police officer has been placed on the streets of Bedford last week. Although the Police Department has faced a critical shortage of staff in June, the staff vacancies have been easing after new-hire incentives were introduced a couple months ago. The Bedford police have accepted six new candidates since June, and one of them — a former police officer of a Massachusetts police department — has began his job with Bedford police patrol.
  3. The Bedford Historical Society is holding a fundraising ice cream social and open house this Sunday. Come tour the Stevens-Buswell building, which is planned to be revamped into community space. Don't miss it!
  4. The "60s Invasion" is coming to Bedford Village Common this Wednesday evening. The free concertfeaturing 60s music will take place starting at 6 p.m. In case of rain, the concert will take place at the Town Hall.
  5. It's time for back-to-school shopping. Check out these school supply lists from Lurgio Middle School.
