Elite Swimmer Undergoes Amputation to Manage Pain
Morgan Stickney, an elite swimmer from Bedford recently underwent an experimental leg amputation in Boston to treat chronic pain.
BEDFORD, N.H. - Morgan Stickney, an elite swimmer from Bedford recently underwent an experimental leg amputation in Boston to treat chronic pain. According to WMUR, Stickney's pain was caused by a swimming injury.
The injury happened six years ago, and after several failed surgeries, Stickney underwent experimental surgery in Boston.
Stickney's surgeon said her leg was amputated under the knee in a modified way to retain muscle function. He said Stickney is the ninth person in the world to undergo the experimental operation.

That should allow her to better use a prosthetic. The method was developed by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
