BOSTON — A student from Exeter High School in New Hampshire has been honored with a scholarship from the Boston Red Sox. Matthew Eaton was among 210 New England graduates to receive the $1,000 Red Sox Service Scholarship for college education. The scholarship recipients were recognized during a pregame ceremony at Fenway Park before the Red Sox-Tampa Bay Rays game on July 30.
The scholarship is awarded based on students' academic performance, financial aid eligibility and demonstrated service to the community, according to the Red Sox Foundation. This year's recipients came from public high schools from throughout New England, including Vermont, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine and Connecticut. Nearly all of them were present on the field to be recognized before the game on July 30.
Before the recognition ceremony, the awardees participated in a community service project with the office of Mayor Martin Walsh and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department. As part of the project, the group picked up trash in five public parks and spaces throughout Boston.
