Local Podiatrist Returns from Mission Trip to Ecuador

EXETER – Kevin Murphy, DPM of Core Podiatry recently traveled to Ecuador on a mission trip with the group Hands Across the World. The group travels annually to the Orellana region of the country to perform free surgeries on patients who would not otherwise be able to afford the procedures.  Hands Across the World began by primarily performing plastic surgeries to correct cleft palates and repair burns, but has expanded to include a greater range of repairs.  This was the first year that the organization included surgeries to correct foot and ankle conditions, such as club foot.  The team of physicians came from all over the United States. Dr. Murphy was accompanied by a podiatry resident.

The group was given space at the region’s hospital and performed screenings on a Sunday, where more than 200 people arrived to be considered for aid.  Approximately 120 procedures were ultimately performed over the next five days, with post-operative clinics on Friday and Saturday.

Dr. Murphy was part of the team who screened patients, and he performed nine surgeries during the week.  In between surgeries, he assisted other physicians wherever needed, from starting IVs to cleaning instruments.

“I really enjoyed being a part of the team that provided care to people who truly need it,” said Dr. Murphy.  “We were able to bring care to a part of the world where those services are just not available otherwise.”

The physicians worked side by side with a local doctor who would be performing continued post-operative care to the patients.  She would also be teaching what she learned to other local providers after the mission group returned home.
