Paddling Events To Explore Great Bay Wildlife In NH

Get up close and personal with Great Bay wildlife this summer with several paddling events by Fish and Game' Discovery Center in Greenland.

GREENLAND, NH — New Hampshire Fish and Game invites community members to explore nature in the Great Bay by participating in the paddling tours by Fish and Game's Great Bay Discovery in Greenland. From bird watching to history trips and river exploration, the event is a chance to get up close with wildlife while paddling through the habitats of New Hampshire's largest estuary. Participants will have a chance to tour protected land and learn some history of the Great Bay.

All kayaks and equipment will be provided at the events, and no prior kayaking experience is necessary to participate, Fish and Game stated. To register or more information call 603-778-0015.

  • Sunset Birding, July 9 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. — For hours leading up to the sunset, the estuary is teeming with wildlife and dusk is one of the more serene times to paddle on the Great Bay. Participants on this trip may be able to spot kingfisher, terns, osprey, great blue heron and other bird varieties. Cost is $35 per person.
  • Squamscott River Exploration, July 18 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. — The group will depart from Chapman's Landing in Newfields, traveling up the serene Squamscott River toward Exeter, exploring hidden creeks and experiencing the diverse coastal wildlife. Cost is $45 per person.
  • Lamprey River Exploration, July 23, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. — The Lamprey River is one of seven rivers that flows into the Great Bay. It is home to the Heron Point sanctuary. Bald eagles and osprey regularly nest in the trees on the river's edge. Cost is $45 per person.
  • Sunset Birding, Aug. 6 from 5:50 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Great Bay History Trip, Aug. 8 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. — Learn about what Great Bay was like before the trains, cars, houses and industry. There is a fascinating cultural history on days when Native Americans and European settlers interacted with the estuary in their days. Cost is $35 per person.
  • Great Bay Stewards Trip, Aug. 24, from 8:30 p.m. to 11 a.m. — Bring your kayak and join Great Bay Stewards in learning how to make big strides in protecting the Great Bay. Free event.
