Roger Syphers has done a great deal for Hampton and its Parks and Recreation Department over the past 40 years.
On Monday, the town officially did a little something for him.
Syphers was recognized by the Hampton Board of Selectmen during a special ceremony Monday night to honor his "dedication," "loyalty," "guidance" and "leadership" while serving Hampton with "distinction," according to the proclamation read by Chairman Dick Nichols.
Syphers said he was "proud" of the award and all of the work he's put in with the department, particularly his efforts to make the men's basketball league robust.
"I’m embarrassed and honored at the same time, if you can understand what I mean by that," said Syphers, who is a 25-year member of the Hampton Heritage Commission. "I didn't expect anything like this."
Nichols said Syphers served Hampton "beyond the call of duty" numerous times, "often at personal sacrifice," which is why he and the board wanted to "make known their appreciation" for Syphers' service.
