Major Road In Hampton Closed To Vehicle Traffic Until Labor Day
Ocean Boulevard is being re-routed onto Ashworth Avenue — which is now two-way traffic, reducing travel to one lane each direction.
HAMPTON, NH — The most traveled road in Hampton, Ocean Boulevard, will be closed to vehicle traffic and rerouted to Ashworth Avenue, which has been made into two-way travel reducing the road to one lane in each direction.
The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NH DOT) changed the prevailing northbound Route 1A traffic patterns in Hampton Thursday. The new patterns are in effect at least until Labor Day.
The new configuration will result in northbound Route 1A (Ocean Boulevard) traffic being detoured to Ashworth Avenue using O Street and then returned to Ocean Boulevard near Nudd Avenue.

The changes are being implemented in accordance with Gov. Chris Sununu's Stay at Home 2.0 Emergency Order. The Seacoast beaches are partially reopening on June 1. As such, this is a collaborative effort between the town of Hampton, the New Hampshire Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, the Division of State Parks, and the NH DOT. The closure of Ocean Boulevard to vehicles will provide for a wider walking mall to allow individuals to properly socially distance.
The southbound right lane of Ashworth Avenue spanning from O Street to Nudd Avenue will be closed for signs, pavement markings and traffic channelization devices to be installed.
Southbound traffic on Ashworth Ave will be shifted to one lane on the right-side of the roadway and be limited to one Southbound lane between O Street and Nudd Avenue. Northbound traffic will utilize the remaining lane of travel providing one lane of travel for Northbound travel.

NH DOT will also be installing changeable message signs and barrels to warn motorist of the new traffic pattern. Motorists are encouraged to exercise caution as they adjust to changes in the road configuration.
In conjunction with the NH DOT Ashworth Avenue traffic reconfiguration work, the Town of Hampton will be installing barriers to close off access to Ocean Blvd, Route 1A from the Letter Streets. NH DOT has labeled the closed streets to Ocean Blvd with “Dead End” signs to warn drivers.
